success stories 2012

Now into our second year with second chance pals, we would like to thank each of our small group of dedicated fosterers and supporters, who have given their heartfelt love, time and financial support so this program can go forward. To see heartwarming success stories for our previous years ... go to:

Adult spayed/neutered pets are continuing to be highly desirable, many times valued for their stable, mature loving and quiet ways, filled with comfort, patience, grace and loyalty.

A big shout out of support to our shelter's director and the many volunteers who help make this extraordinary outplacement program possible.

At this time, our goal of calling attention to the plight of adult animals in our shelter is being realized. As Pets for Patriots comes on board, our own Rolling Rescue and additional rescue sources, we are heartened that older companion animals are becoming more valued and are being adopted. Since there are now
a variety of ways that second chance pals will be finding their forever homes, from June forward, we reserve success stories from here on out for those animals who are either scp specific or have unusual or difficult adoption stories we can highlight.

Adult spayed/neutered pets are continuing to be highly desirable, many times valued for their stable, mature loving and quiet ways, filled with comfort, patience, grace and loyalty.

Please keep our adult shelter animals in mind when adding to your household members!

Baxter

A very frightened dog was turned into the shelter the end of November. Fortunately for Oscar, a new scp foster volunteer happened to be at the shelter the day he was being taken out for a walk and he ran right over to her . . . somehow knowing she would have his best interest at heart. Here he is in the righthand photo, settling in to her warm cozy foster home . . . knowing he is safe, but waiting to find his forever home.

His loyalty can be counted on. Please call the shelter and ask to "Meet and Greet". If he chooses you, you won't be disappointed!

Annie, Mazie and Buddy
Three lovely dogs were turned into the shelter as a family. They were eligible for adoption as a family unit, or individually. Two of a threesome, were adopted at the Turkey Creek Adoptathon. Thanks to Karen W. for taking all three of these wonderful little dogs into her home and heart and found Annie irresistible and adopted her into their family.

Sam's owner passed away leaving him homeless. He is about 5 years old and has been well cared for all his life. He is well socialized and adjusted, a little on the quiet side. He needs someone that will love him for the rest of his life. On an aside, He loves to be tickled and will roll around with enjoyment!

11.16 Update:
At a recent adoptathon Sam placed his head affectionately in the lap of a young boy. The parents noticed this setting the baby that was in a carrier near the boy. Sam lifted his head gently nosing the carrier. Sam has been in a foster home since September 5 and continues to show that he is trustworthy and affectionate. A perfect dog for a companion to come home to.

Sam has also lost 8 pounds since September 5. He loves to go for walks and will play fetch out in the yard.
Do the words "Happy Dog!!" come to mind when you look at Sam enjoying his new-found freedom at his foster home with Esther N.? happy dog

Sindy W. is working with Peanut on a couple of issues. When he does go to his forever home, she wants him to be successful. He has some very nice traits, but we'd like to keep him in the fold until we work out a couple of issues. Poor little guy seems to have never known a life that includes a gentle and loving touch.

Update 8/12. Sindy's found this little guy's sweet spot! He will do anything for a tennis ball!

We didn't have anyone to foster Little Lily when she came into the shelter, but she was quickly adopted twice and returned twice: once for being skittish around small children and then in her last home for being skittish and fearful. Liz S. has agreed to take Lily into her heart and home for some real foster care and we are optimistic that Little Lily will be able to overcome her fears and become the confident little dog she needs to be for a successful placement. Keep her in your thoughts!

11.16 Keeping this somewhat fragile little girl in our thoughts paid off and after spending time with Liz S. she found the perfect someone who fell in love with her and will give her the home she deserves and needs. This couple wanted her before and were so excited to see her available again! They had already bought her clothes and blankets, and other stuff before they came to get her! Godspeed little Lily . . .

Cute little Tina, caught the eye of an older gentleman who looked at each and every dog at the PetsMart Adoptathon in Alcoa, coming back to Tina, "That's the one," and Tina found her new home.

Bella
Funny how things work in our scp program. We were getting very concerned about 8-year-old Bella who had been in the shelter for over a month. We have no volunteer to foster cats and decided to ask our shelter director if Bella could become part of our program and stay at the shelter. She was conditional in her response, but said as long as there was room, Bella could be part of scp.

The very next day, Bella was adopted!! We are all thrilled for this beautiful kitty and for her new owner!

Please consider becoming one of our kitty fosters. They are the least amount of trouble and are so grateful.

KayLee
My name is KayLee . . . People say that they think I have the most beautiful markings ever!  I love people and other dogs and will follow you to the ends of the earth!  I have been told that I am very intelligent and already know to sit in front of you and wait for you to give my orders . . . I come when called, and will lay down as well, if I can stop wagging my butt long enough!  I'm a happy girl and only want to be a part of your family.  I weigh about 38 pounds so I'm a good size . . . not too big, not too small.

Karen W. taking Snowball into her loving home for the best kind of foster care!
August 21: Snowball is recovering from kidney stone removal operation after a severe urinary tract infection. We are optimistic this will bring her back to health, a more loving disposition and into a deserving permanent home.

August 24: Karen reports that Snowball's trip to the vet was very telling: she had TWO kidney stones removed that were each the size of a half dollar! Feeling much better now . . . both physically and temperamentally. The first four photos were taken before the operation.
Sept. 13 from Nancie Guido: Funny how these little guys can get under one's skin. Snowball came from a severe neglect case where she was kept in a crate in her own filth and who knows what else she endured in addition to the pain of those kidney stones. She has been under a hold so that the shelter can do another temperament assessment on her after she snapped at her fosters during the time of her recuperation.

It was my and Anja's pleasure - as the two founders of scp - to go visit Snowball and see the progress that has occurred under the loving care of Karen and Terry W. It is nothing short of miraculous. Everyone who meets this little dog is falling in love with her. She's a delightful, fun-loving little girl. Gets along wonderfully with other dogs.

When she passes her temperament test in the next week or two, she will then be available for adoption. In the meantime, her fans are working to build her confidence to the point where her test will be a slamdunk, taking her out to meet, greet and socialize after she goes in for a formal Pom grooming.

After spending an hour with her yesterday, I can honestly say that whomever adopts this little dog will be getting a real gem . . . one that deserves the best home possible. She may be best suited to go into a home with a mature couple or a person who will have time to spend with her.

Since she was kept in a crate for most of her life, she was never housebroken. Karen has been working diligently with her and the prospects are looking very good. You can teach an old dog new tricks, especially when there are treats involved! We're also working with her on some minor food aggression issues as well.

Hanging out with her foster dad!

Learning to take treats "gently."
Snowball with her foster mum, Karen at left and her new owner, Lexi at the PetsMart adoptathon on 10/13. This event was targeted to place Snow with the one person who was willing to wait for her.

Snow had just completed her temperament testing held at the MCFA Thrift store after our scp meeting on 10/12 with her cadre of supporters. We would not go so far as to say that she passed with "flying colors," as she is still not considered an appropriate placement for children in the home, but pass she did! We are thrilled that Lexi who has waited patiently through this process is finally able to take her home. Big thanks to Karen and Terry W. taking Snow into their hearts and lives, loving and retraining this adorable and playful little dog.

Freckles
Freckles was in and out of scp so quickly, the webmaster didn't have time to catch her on Petango before someone adopted her! That's good news!

Sue MacD said "Freckles is 7 yrs old and a doxie. Don't know much about her or than she was very friendly and followed Liz S. around the shelter. She seemed to imprint on anyone that paid attention to her. Such a love."

Portia is a  beautiful energetic girl looking for a home that is a match for her willingness to be on the go. She tends to forget how big she really is and playfully jumps up but quickly gets down when told. Obedience training and learning how to channel her energy would go a long way as she is a very intelligent dog. Loves people and gets along pretty well with other dogs, especially alpha males. She does like to have the final say when playing so she is may do best with dogs that have a submissive nature, though obedience training will help with this dominence. She was just exploding with energy when I brought her home after staying at the shelter for one month! It took a couple of days for her to settle in. She now is more relaxed and will lay with my two dogs on a hot summer afternoon. She loves to swim in the pond as well.

Update 9.19: Portia will jump the fence after game, but does return, but it is Esther's goal to teach her to respect the fence. She still likes to chew and it given chew bones to curb that need. She is being taught manners at mealtime as well. Esther N.
Portia, happy to have found her forever home.

Milo, another Sindy W. Pets for Patriots adoptee

From Sindy 5.08
: A short report on Milo, he is non aggressive to other dogs and child friendly.  I will work on his obedience skills, right now he is a little strong willed and doesn't want to come when called or sit when told but he has had an eventful day. He is very loving and soaks up attention, he is a perfect lap dog. He is a little skinny but nothing stays skinny around me for any length of time.
Update 5.15: Milo is doing well, he is doing better as far as listening to commands, such as get down, No, coming when he is called. which is an improvement from when he first got here.

Milo's new dad is Jeremiah Shukait, an honorably discharged Marine who lives in Sweetwater (Sindy W.'s roommate). He fell in love with Milo after living here a month and couldn't stand the thought of Milo Foster being adopted out so he went through the process of getting his dd214 papers - which took a couple weeks - but once he got the papers it was a very fast approval to become a 'patriot'! Milo and Jeremiah sleep together go on drives together and, they are happy companions.

He will sit for treats and enjoys being petted and gets along very well with the other dogs and has been cat tested. Pretty good on a leash and rides well in a car. He jumped out of a pen at the shelter and was investigating the side yard; when found he came when called, showing an obedient nature.Teaching not to jump up and also crate training.

Early report from Sindy W: Bingo is fitting in with my pack. He has not marked in the house; I have been showing him how to use the doggie door and he will be a pro in no time. He rode in my open Jeep without issue, stuck his head out the window and laid on the seat with not a care in the world. He goes in on Tues. for health check, teeth cleaning and neutering.
Update 8.21: Bingo began exhibiting dominant behavior with Sindy's larger dog, though he fit in very well with her smaller dogs. The decision was made to put him back in the shelter until such time that he is adopted or a more appropriate foster site can be found. Sindy still cares very much for him and says he is such a sweet dog. She's planning to take him to the adoptathon PetsMart in Alcoa and for walks when she is at the shelter. She took him in for a full health check with dental exam and treatment that included four extractions.

Lucy is a Special Needs rescue with a heart murmur.

Lucy is being fostered by Liz S. who reports that her foster is a wonderful 2- to 3-year-old Chihuahua who loves being near you. She has a heart murmur but that hasn’t stopped her from normal daily doggie activities, though she does like to nap frequently and usually lays on the comfy dog bed or in the chair with me. An older man or woman will especially appreciate her gentle, quiet, well-mannered ways as she is a great little lap dog and overall companion. Once outside, she walks pretty well on a leash and is social with other dogs and cats. No problems with other people, including children. Comes when called, as she is learning her name. During thunderstorms, she wants to be comforted and right with you, but other loud noises don’t seem to bother her. She is not quite settled with car rides, but is getting used to them as Liz takes her to “Puppy Play Day” twice a week where she interacts with other dogs and cats and does very well."Lucy is a very loving girl who likes to give kisses and sleep under the covers with me and my dog Buster." Sweet, sweet, sweet!

Maple
Was included at the U.S. Cellular Adoptathon on 8.4 and proved herself to be a great little trooper. She was not doing all that well at the shelter and was soooo glad to be out and social with other dogs and people, giving us a radiant "smile" in gratitude! Maple went back to Sindy and was quickly adopted.

A very gentle appreciative little guy. All he wants is to find "his" person.

He is currently undergoing treatment for a very mild form of heartworm and should be good to go after that.
Boon is a very loving boy, who has fit right in with his foster volunteer's home and their dogs. He's a little shy to begin with, but warms up nicely with a little encouragement. His new owner will be getting a companion that is loyal and easy to get along . . . one that comes with a cute bushy tail!

A very socialized, well-rounded dog, who does not have problems with adults or children. Gets along well with other dogs. Has not been cat tested. Scotch shares his temporary home with another foster named Danny, with whom he enjoys playing. He does a good job of keeping up with the energy level. Scotch is a sweet fellow, loves people and is very playful.

Another Esther N. success!
Scotch plays in a large fenced yard and respects the fence. He also spends time in a smaller kennel area and though he doesn’t always like this and will whine and bark especially if he sees me, he is learning to accept being in a kennel. Scotch is very good in the house and is housebroken. He likes to lie down in the living room near me. He will go into his crate with a treat waiting for him. Once in the crate he accepts it and sleeps through the night. Scotch is pretty good on a leash but still needs work with that. Scotch knows the “sit” and “lay” commands. He usually comes when you call him. He likes to be with me wherever I go and is always attentive and willing to learn.

Here he is shown with his new family!!

Esther N.'s foster

Adopted by an employee at ADT who had admired and interacted with him, though at the time it looked as if he had already been claimed for adoption. He and his wife drove over to the blistering hot 4th of July event in Sweetwater to adopt him into their family. They are shown in the photo below.

Chief is a beautiful fawn-colored, well-adjusted American Staffordshire Terrier, commonly known as a pitbull mix. He came into the shelter after his owner's landlord said he had to go. He is two years old and when we brought him into the cat room at the shelter, he only went for a drink of their water not paying much attention to the felines occupying the room.
Esther says this about her new foster: Ryan, our 16 year old son, has spent time with Chief who likes playing tug with the rope toy. Chief's always up for a ride in the car. When I talk to him sometimes he rests his head against my arm. He is looking for a home that will make him a member of their family. Loves to run and play but is quite content to just relax right next to you. He likes his big kennel that we have given him and seems to say, "If you have to go somewhere I'm cool with that, too!"

At a recent adoptathon, Chief got along with all the other dogs and was very much at ease with all of the people, so much so that someone spoke for him right away, but unfortunately, this individual was not in a position to go through with the adoption. A very nicely tempered dog that we are pleased to have in our foster program.

Buxton aka "Bucky"
April 22: Bucky is a special needs guy and scp is going to get to the bottom of his allergies and lethargy. He has a wonderful disposition and even at his age of 6+ years old deserves what we can do for him. He'll be going in for testing shortly and we'll report back.

Bucky was first fostered by Karen who had a medical emergency and we needed to find another foster home. This January report by "Doc".
Nicknamed ‘Bucky’, this delightful little guy now knows all the rules in his new foster home. He learned real fast not to ‘mark’ his territory or tip over waste baskets. He is almost housebroken, for his foster parents are working on under-standing his ‘woof’ and think it means he wants to go out. Once outside, he walks well on a leash, ignores chickens and only wants to pick up the scent of a deer or a raccoon or anything! His manners in the house are impeccable. He does not jump on people or furniture, ignores the cats and thinks it cool to have dog buddies. He had one wild ‘alone’ time when he was first left alone in the house, but now realizes that the foster family always returns and still loves him. Bucky thinks riding in cars, two square meals, his own bed and back scratches are the best. He would be great as a single dog, part of a pack, with older or younger families.

Bucky went back to his first foster mom.
She reports on Feb. 20
:
Now, I am having a ball with my new foster.  Buxton (Bucky) is too, too funny!  He's a tagalong...no matter where Terry or I go, he's right behind. You've got to be watching all the time or his attachment to our feet and legs becomes permanent.  He and I are joined at the "snore."  Yup, he snores louder than I do.  His allergies don't seem to affect him much...he doesn't scratch.  AND ALL our children are Bucky fans, except perhaps Sheba.  She's the same size and weight; Bucky gets attention where Sheba thinks she should be getting HIS attention.  He's not too good on a leash; that is, for now.  Terry's shoulder seems to detach from his arm every time Bucky takes a walk with the rest of the "family."  However, Bucky takes one look at Terry, and Terry's a sap for more.  Heh, heh, heh.

Bucky eats a special food for allergies; he gets no medication for it.  He's lively, loves sleeping in the sun, loves taking sunny space in the house, no matter whose space it is or was, he is not so much for climbing on furniture or beds...but he loves to lie next to wherever we humans sleep...AND he snoresssssssss, AND he absolutely loves to ride in the car.  I will write more later.  Right now, this is it.  He's so lovable; someone will be very lucky if he becomes their baby.  At least, that's what Sheba (my Yorkie) thinks (me too).

Update 2.27.12: Bucky is just plain cute and silly.  Watching him makes me feel this little guy is younger than six.

I don't know where to begin in telling all the things that attribute to Bucky being more a puppy than a young adult.  He truly is lively; he buries any toys you give him; what he doesn't bury, he surrounds himself with.  There is much more about him, other what I've already said.  However, my fingers might not make out.  One good thing...his food allergy has all but disappeared.  No more itching and no more hair loss. When he looks up at you, you melt. He just needs to find his forever home!

Huge news ... almost 6 months from time of Bucky's intake, this boy found his forever home at the PetsMart Adoptathon!! Thanks to Karen and Terry Walsh for sticking by this special boy and also thanks to Doc for filling in when needed!

Sheva is currently in a Foster home and is a friendly gal who likes to be with people. She is very active and needs a active home with plenty of stimulation.  Leash trained, crate trained, knows most of the commands and is house trained.  Because she is a active dog she should not be with children under 12.  An indoor dog. She is a fence jumper and should always be on a leash when taken outside. If you are interested in seeing this great pup call the shelter and we will have her brought to the shelter.

We thought we had Sheva placed, but plans fell through :o(. We'll keep looking for just the perfect home for her.

Sheva was a long-term foster who finally found her forever home today!! Thank you Dana for hanging in there with this special girl.

Odie

May not be good with large dogs, but he loves people and at this point we know he fits in well with other small dogs. Good natured cute little guy, with a tail that wags nonstop! Easy to handle.

Foster text report 4.23:
Good news this morning, Odie didn't 'mark' in the house at all last nite.  Also he is a kisser, not only does he love giving ppl kisses but other dogs as well. Tim Tim and Sam can only take so much face licking so when they snap at Odie he just keeps wagging his tail and in a few minutes he will come back an do it again. Sindy

This little guy is cute as a button, knows how to "sit, stay, go to bed and stop"! Very easy to handle. He has been around young children with no problems. He has stayed at Tellico Bed & Biscuit when his family is out of town and loved it there.

From Harley's Foster 3.08.12: This is a brief update on Harley; he is house trained,  he is child friendly, non aggressive to other dogs, very polite about food and treats—you can reach in his mouth and take a treat from him and he will not snap. He is a very positive dog, he barks good morning to me when I get up, he has a nice voice not annoying at all. He doesn't like it when the other dogs play rough, he will step in-between them as if to say stop it, but he doesn't show any dominate traits very passive. He has been neutered. He will sit on command, he uses doggie door. He is a perfect gentleman,  I am going to enjoy having him as a guest.
Update 3.19 Thisboy is cat friendly!

From Carrie at the shelter: "Just wanted to let you all know about a newcomer at the shelter. She's a black lab named Betsy. Her age hasn't been determined - her teeth are in nice shape, but she's gray around the muzzle. Maybe 6-7 years? She is a really nice, easygoing dog. I'm crossing my fingers that a foster is available, but I know they've been in short supply lately.

Nye
This little dog truly highlights the benefits of our second chance palsprogram!! Her owner had to give her up when she could no longer afford to keep her. Two months later, after having been a part of second chance pals, the owner's circumstances changed and she was able to re-adopt and reunite with her dog! Without foster care, Nye who is handicapped surely would have been put down. We are so happy that we could save this little dog. Big thanks goes out to fosterer, Sindy W.!

Nye’s wish for the New Year is a forever home with a cozy bed and a person to cuddle with. She is a wonderful laid-back 10 year old Chihuahua and Jack Russell Terrier mix. She is a bundle of love who would enjoy occupying that empty space on your lap. She is vaccinated, spayed, and ready to join her new family. Though Nye does walk with a limp, she runs on three legs and does not seem to be aware of this slight handicapp.  She does all those doggie things that all dogs do.  She is a very affectionate dog, loves to lick and give kisses, she likes sleeping under the covers with us. Great about using doggie doors to go outside and use the bathroom and is wonderful with children.   She is in a Foster Home, so just call the shelter (423.442.1015) if you are interested in seeing her and we will have her brought to the shelter for you to meet her.

Information about Rat Terriers
Jenny is up to date on all shots and is on heartworm prevention.

Jenny loves her role as a lapdog. She will be wonderful for an older man or woman who wants a nice lap dog and a stick-with-you kind of companion. She's house broken and in good health. She tends to be possessive of her person. Is social with other dogs, however, the fosterer tends to think that she may be best as an only dog. Good with children. Crate trained. Comes when called. She has had no issues with barking and no destructive habits.

Sasha is one of the sweetest, most loveable dogs you will ever get to know. Not recommended for homes with children under 12. She has a very easygoing and gentle disposition and loves hanging out with people. She gets along great with other dogs and is fine around cats. Sasha dreams of having a forever home and a person to snuggle with. If you make her dreams a reality, she will be eternally grateful. In return, she will give you something to be thankful for every day - her unconditional love, the happy wag of her tail, and her warm body resting on your lap.
Adopted by foster.

So happy to say that Briggs is another "Foster Failure" fitting in so well with the MacD's that he is now in his forever home! Wow, it didn't take long for this fellow to win over his people . . .

Sandie is a bit timid until she feels secure that you are not going to harm her. A sweet girl, she is crate trained and has had several dog training classes and done very well in them.

Update 12.14: Sandie has made a wonderful adjustment to her new foster home and has fit into her new pack with ease. She continues to gain confidence as she is allowed freedom to make choices for herself. Karen reports that she is an exceptionally kind dog, especially when one of her dogs was feeling under the weather. Sandie will certainly become someone's heart dog.

Our first adoption out of the gate, was a foster girl who had a tough time getting someone to believe in her. After spending a year in a rescue in upstate New York from puppyhood, she was brought back by her first foster and eventually transitioned to scp. So after virtually 18+ months, living in confinement and never knowing what "home" was even about, she is now free and going to live with a person who knew from the moment she saw her photo that Sandie was "her" dog! We are all so happy for this very special girl! Hope to get photos of Sandie with her new owner . . . A big thanks to all who worked with her to make this happen.
